The president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and outgoing BJP MP, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, is facing charges of sexual harassment. The Delhi Police chargesheet, based on the ongoing investigation, states that Singh is “liable to be prosecuted and punished” for the offenses of stalking and molestation. The chargesheet invokes sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 354 (outraging modesty of a woman), 354 A (sexual harassment), and 354 D (stalking), highlighting that Singh’s harassment was repeated and continuing in one case.

According to a report by the Indian Express, six women wrestlers registered complaints against Singh, asserting that he is “liable to be prosecuted and punished.” The chargesheet reveals that the police have interviewed 108 witnesses, including wrestlers, coaches, and referees. Fifteen witnesses corroborated the allegations made by the wrestlers.

The Delhi Police has requested the court to summon Singh and the witnesses. If convicted, Singh could face a jail term of up to three to five years. The chargesheet presented specific allegations reported by The Indian Express:

Allegation 1: During a dinner at a hotel restaurant, Singh called one of the wrestlers to his table, placed his hand on her breast, groped her, and then slid his hand down to her stomach. Later, at the WFI office, he touched her inappropriately on her palm, knee, thighs, and shoulders without consent, and placed his hand on her breast, sliding it down her stomach under the pretext of checking her breathing.

Allegation 2: While lying down on the mat, the wrestler was shocked when Singh, without permission, pulled up her T-shirt, placed his hand on her breast, and slid it down her stomach, again using the excuse of checking her breathing. At the federation office, she was called into Singh’s room, with her brother asked to stay back. Singh closed the door, pulled her forcefully towards himself, and tried to make physical contact against her will.

Allegation 3: Singh made the wrestler talk to her parents on the phone, then called her towards his bed and attempted to hug her forcefully without her permission. He also tried to bribe her by offering to buy her supplements in exchange for sexual favors as an athlete.

Allegation 4: While standing in the last row for a team photograph, Singh approached the wrestler and placed his hand on her buttock. When she tried to move away, he forcibly held her by the shoulder.

Allegation 5: Under the pretense of taking a picture with her, Singh pulled the wrestler towards him, grabbing her shoulder. To protect herself, she attempted to move away from him. Singh then threatened her, saying, “Acting too smart? I will not let you participate in future competitions.”

Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar on June 15, following a complaint lodged by the women wrestlers. Singh has denied the charges of sexual harassment, with an aide expressing confidence in proving his innocence through the judicial process.
