In a recent development, North Korea announced the successful launch of its latest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) named Hwasong-18. This solid-fuel-based missile was launched in response to alleged airspace violations by a US spy drone. The missile traveled an impressive distance of 1,001 kilometers, reaching a maximum altitude of 6,648 km before landing in the East Sea.

Notably, this is only the second time North Korea has launched a solid-fuel-based ICBM, with the previous attempt taking place in April this year. The launch was personally guided by the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, who hailed it as a significant achievement, describing the missile’s blast-off as a “grand explosion” that reverberated across the globe. Kim also expressed his determination to pursue a series of stronger military offensives against the US and South Korea until they alter their perceived hostile policies towards North Korea.

South Korea and the United States have responded to this escalation by enhancing their collaboration on security measures. They issued a joint statement, warning that any nuclear aggression from Pyongyang would result in a retaliatory nuclear strike and potentially lead to the collapse of the North Korean government. South Korea condemned the launch as a significant provocation that undermines peace and security on the Korean peninsula, urging North Korea to cease such actions and comply with United Nations sanctions.

The international community, including the United Nations and the United States, strongly denounced North Korea’s missile launch. Adam Hodge, spokesperson for the US National Security Council, emphasized that this act flagrantly violated multiple UN Security Council resolutions and needlessly heightened tensions, thereby posing a risk to regional security.

The development of solid-fuel-based missiles by North Korea serves strategic purposes. Solid fuel offers several advantages over liquid fuel, including denser composition and rapid thrust generation. Additionally, it can be stored for extended periods without degradation, unlike liquid fuel, which tends to deteriorate over time.

As tensions continue to rise, the situation on the Korean peninsula has reached a critical point, prompting concerns about a nuclear crisis. The international community remains vigilant in its efforts to de-escalate tensions and maintain stability in the region.
