Joint Opposition Meeting

India’s leading opposition parties are gearing up for the 2024 General election with a 2-day joint meeting in Bengaluru today (17 July). At least 26 Opposition parties will assemble at Taj West End Hotel in the evening to present a united front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the Centre. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, is overseeing all preparations for the meeting, which will host the opposition leaders at a five-star hotel in the city.

Opposition Meeting’s Agenda: Preserving the Idea of India

MLA Priyank Kharge, Karnataka Minister and son of Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge, highlighted the objective of the joint opposition meeting. He stated, “We have come together to preserve the idea of India and the Constitution.” He further mentioned that the BJP’s unease with their unity suggests their fear of being unseated. According to Kharge, Prime Minister Modi’s popularity is declining, and BJP’s policies are adversely affecting the country.

Prominent Absence and Meeting Schedule

Notably, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and daughter Supriya Sule will not attend the opposition joint meeting today but will join the crucial meet tomorrow. The tentative schedule for the gathering includes an informal meeting at 6 pm, followed by dinner at 8 pm. On July 18, the meeting will commence at 11 am and run until 4 pm. A press conference may also take place to announce the campaign strategy for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
